Selftying Structures - Groningen
8 november 2025 — 9 november 2025
The dates for this course are 8 and 9 November.
Tickets are only available for both days and you are expected to attend each date. You cannot buy separate tickets and there won’t be any catch-up possibilities.
This is the second part (Structures) in @Lokka’s selftying series.
Why selftying?
Selftying offers a valuable way to explore rope without needing to rely on a partner, as well as a chance to connect with one’s own body and emotions. Learning opportunities for those without a tying partner, or those who prefer to work solo, are still limited. This workshop aims to help fill that gap.
Teacher
Lokka (she/her) is a growing teacher and has been the main host of the AlmeerseRopeJam since October 2021. As a rope switch and selftyer, she began by teaching solely from the model’s side, and is now expanding into the role of teaching rigger and selftyer. Her style is mostly improvised, supported by a strong technical foundation. While she primarily selfties for practical reasons, her approach also touches on its emotional depth.
In selftying, Lokka enjoys challenging herself with shapes that seem impossible to achieve alone, and finding ways to make them work anyways. She explores the capabilities of her body and mind, often discovering creative tricks she might not have considered when tying with a partner.
When tying with a partner, her focus is on the connection, not the rope. Rope becomes a shared language, a medium through which something intimate and magical can unfold. She ties with someone because she wants to spend time with them, the rope sort of happens to be there and with it, together they create magic. Whether standing as a model or being closer to the floor as a rigger, she enjoys the dynamics that floorwork brings her.
Location
Room 5 at the usual place where the Groningen Jam holds their ropejams and workshops.
Detailed information and how to enter will be shared in email and on your ticket.
For whom?
This is a course for those who feel confident with single and double column ties, wrapping techniques, basic rope handling, and several frictions. It is a technical course with little emphasis on the emotional or connective aspects of rope. Whether the interest is in self-tying, rigging, or modelling, the material is relevant across all roles. While the focus is on selftying, the skills learned can also be applied in partnered rope.
By the end of this course, there will be a clear understanding of why certain structures are built the way they are. For those with an interest in suspensions, understanding that “why” is essential.
Requirements
- Awareness of your own physical abilities and emotional boundaries;
- Physical ability to comfortably wrap rope around your own upper and lower body in a seated position;
- At least 3x 8m of rope – preferably jute or hemp;
- Fluent execution of a sustainable single and double column tie;
- Basic understanding of frictions and rope handling skills.
- If you want to tie the complete chest harness: physical ability of tying a tight knot/bow behind your back.
If you have any doubts or questions about whether or not you meet the requirements, please feel free to send a message to Lokka.
Schedule
For both dates this is the schedule:
- 11:00 Doors open
- 11:30 Start tuition
- 2x 30 minutes break (roughly 13:30-14:00 and 15:30-16:00)
- 17:00 End tuition
At 11:30 the tuition actually starts, so be on time. If for whatever reason you’ve been delayed, send a message to Lokka or Danean (who will be providing hosting services this day) before 11:30 so that Lokka can take this into account.
Content
The main focus of this course is not just how to tie structures, but also why they are tied, and more importantly, why they are constructed the way they are. Throughout the course, one or more variations of the following will be explored:
- Gunslinger
- Legbinder
- Agura
- Booty basket
- Futomomo
- (Lokka’s) chest harness
The focus will be on tying above structures, but rope handling skills and safety considerations are also part of this course
At the end of this course (if you have participated on both dates) you will have a solid base to return to and if you have mastered the content (after practicing on your own), you will be ready to start diving into getting those structures up in the air.
The workshop will be taught in English unless all participants speak Dutch.
Tickets
There are 10 tickets available for this workshop, priced at €150 per person.
Tickets will be made available soon, with some warning via fetlife in advance.
Food/drinks
Ropejam Groningen will provide some snacks, tea and coffee.
The 30 minute breaks are not long enough to go out and buy some food. So if you want lunch, be sure to bring some.
